Frame Love

If there is one thing I have a lot of, it's frames. I love it when I find them. Some I paint, and some I leave as is.

I painted these frames using various gesso techniques.

Dry brushing white gesso over grey.

Lots of gesso and gesso/paint mix.

Crackle finish.

I'll have a tutorial on a great way to achieve this finish.

I just acquired these frames.

What you see here is just a small portion of what I have. Do you love frames as much as I do? Which paint finish do you like? Or, do you like the gold?

See that metal piece behind the frames in the first two photos? I purchased it at an estate sale for $8. It was hanging outside, and I had to have it, rust and all.

I'll be back to share more finds, and redesigns. Oh yes, and a few tutorials. See ya soon.

  1. Hey Rosemary, I love gilded, but white steals my heart! I just picked up a great ornate white oval frame at a fabulous thrift shop for a song. It needs a bit of "refinishing" but it'll be fablulous when I'm done. Perhaps I'll even venture into the world of gesso on this one! :D

  16. I am wild about frames like yours. I look for frames like that whenever I am out junking or antiquing. I love your Gesso technique the most, but occasionally I love a great gold frame too. I am your newest follower. Hope you'll come by and visit my blog as well.

  17. Hi Rosemary,
what wonderful pieces..can't wait to see the "rust piece" get refinished... and for frames, I like both painted and gold...it depends on the decor it's going in..and the art or print that will be in the frame too...so both are essential..
    best,
    maureen

  32. Great frames, Rosemary! I love the round and oval ones. I never seem to have any luck coming across any of those.

  33. Great frames! I love those scroll work ones in the middle of the 'pile' but I too like all kinds of frames. When I go thrifting, I immediately am drawn to frames and mirrors and I tend to not like the gold and prefer white, black and other colors.

  34. I love frames too and am always on the lookout for them! I usually paint them and distress them, but I am going to try the gesso technique soon!! I love that look!

  35. Hello Rosemary! I haven't been to your beautiful blog in too long, I've been such a lazy blogger lately. Your frames are gorgeous and all your painting techniques are too! I sure wish I could magically transport you here to help me with my headboard. I bought some foam tiles (they were less than $3 each) and I've been torturing myself ALL day long today trying to get them to look like rusty antique tin ceiling tiles. I think I finally got them to a point where they're ok but who knows, maybe tomorrow I'll wake up and say Ewwwww!!!!

  36. I went through a gold phase about 10 years ago, but now loving your gesso/paint finish. I think I need to be painting my gold mirrors soon!

  39. Beautiful frames. I kind of like them gold; I seem to be in a "gold phase" and they would look fabulous grouped on a mantel for fall with some pumpkins and vines.

  42. Rosemary - I am learning so much from you tonight, I can't believe it! You are truly an amazing artist with that paintbrush, girl! In one photo, you said you used regular old glue as your medium and brushed your gesso/paint mix on top. Can I use Mod Podge as my medium and Annie Sloan chalk paint on top? Will it still crackle? Do you always use the Weathered Wood Crackle Medium, or are there others that you would recommend, too? Sorry for all the questions, but my mind's just buzzin' right now and I would love to learn how to make my furniture look like yours! ♥ Hugs!
