Frenchy and Graphic

My latest redesign. This pair of frenchy tables.

The before.

I actually tried to save the tops of these, but  the finish was so uneven and spotty. Even after a good sanding and stain, I hated it. So, I decided to give them a complete makeover. I had a vision of something very graphic on top. I went with a lace design.

This pair has at least three shades of grey and blue, with  white gesso mixed in. I started with a dark color, and with each layer, added a little white. I followed with multiple washes of white gesso. After sanding, this gave it much more depth.

I'm working on so many things simultaneously. I'll have more to share very soon.

  2. Once again, SO pretty! Did you have a stencil for the "lace" tops?

  3. Beautiful! Did you use an actual piece of lace or a stencil?

  4. OK, for everyone who is asking, I made a stencil out of lace.

  7. I have done the lace spay paint thing before. Works great. I have also used real fern leaves. Paint the item white, after dry, place real fern leaves as desired. Spray over them with Dark green spray paint. When leaves are removed you see there prints. Spray the paint slow as not to blow the leaves away. Great job of re styling. 8. Yes, it does work great. Just go back to my post "Before and Afters". You can use a lot of different things as a stencil.

  20. Just found your blog, I'm your newest follower.
These tables are fantastic! I think this project may have pushed me to the point of finally deciding to paint some furniture...I tend to love most of the dark wood finishes. I even cringed a little when I saw how pretty the tops were before but they're just as pretty now (and that was also before I read they were damaged to begin with). You are so talented! I just looked at some of the other projects you've done. WOW!
Thank you for the inspiration...your tables are over the top gorgeous!!!

  35. The shading and distressing on your tables is absolute perfection, Rosemary! When you're mixing the gesso in with the paint, how much do you use? What exactly does gesso do to the paint? :)

  36. Gesso adds body and texture. It is basically a primer, so it acts as a bonding agent as well.
