Redesigning With Parts II

A few posts back, I showed you a few redesigns using lamp and clock parts. Today, I'm using panels and window parts. After my "Redesigning With Parts" post, I had a humorous exchange with some of my fellow bloggers about being able to create all winter from the mountain of fragments and parts I have in my garage. Actually, I could probably do it all year. So, here's another one.



This piece was created from one of six panels of an octagon table that was thrown in for free (because the table was in such bad shape) at an estate sale, .  Although the table as a whole was no prize, the panels were very decorative and three of them were completely intact. I detached the panels, painted them white, and played around with a grungy finish. This is where I stopped about a year ago.




I had an onslaught of work that took precedence at the time, and away they went into the garage, where I just stopped thinking about them.

Yesterday, I decided to give them a weathered white finish.


I went over the grungy look with my white gesso/paint mixture. Then I wiped and scrubbed the mixture with a rag before it was completely dry.



The next step was to turn it into a functional item. I attached two vintage window sash locks to serve as hooks.



Now, it's a nice decorative piece that can hold keys,



serve as an easel,



hold little bud vases,



a mirror,



a wreath,


kitchen or bath towels, etc.





I'll probably do something different with  the other two panels.  Whatever I decide to create, I'll be sure to share.

    You are really creative, Rosemary! I am always bookmarking your blog posts for new ideas to try - gesso, lace cloth stencil, now this. Those beat up octo tables are all over here on the Cape and they often have a nice panel or two on them. I would never have thought of using them in this way but it's beautiful!

    Wow! Such a beautiful piece! It will look absolutely gorgeous in any cottage or shabby decor... love the finish on it and the swags on the panel look so pretty.     I totally love the wreath and vase ideas! Of course, since I love shabby chic, I always like bows and distressed things, but the addition of the accessories really make this piece come to live. Great job!

    I think my jaw dropped when I saw all the uses you'd found for the panel. Not just beautiful, but practical and versatile.

    When are you going to get your own show? I don't think there's any other home crafting blog that I follow that consistently has such brilliant, do-able ideas.
