Redesigning With Parts

I love finding parts and fragments, because I know I can repurpose them. I've been playing with the clock faces I showed you in my last post.  Something else I love to find are lamp parts. I created this vignette out of a combination of lamp parts, and clock faces.


One of my candle holders started like this.


See the two pieces on the right? I gave them a coat of silver, stacked them, and added prisms.



The white candle holder I've actually had for a while. It's made of two lamp parts. I turned one of the pieces upside down, and screwed them together.




Yesterday I gave it a fresh coat of my white gesso/paint mixture. Then I did this.




One of my clock faces fit inside perfectly.









Here is another lamp base I turned into a candle stand.






So, don't pass up those broken lamps and parts. I've bought boxes full of parts for as little as five bucks. Think about what you would pay for a nice ornate metal stand in a retail store. I'll have more ideas for you soon.  Right now, I have to get back to a few furniture redesigns.

    Well isn't that just the neatest idea. You think of everything! I've thought of repainting lamps and changing out the shade, but never taking it apart and using it in an entirely different way.

    WOW! Rosemary, they're great! I used a ceiling light to hold glass votives. It fits perfect in the middle of my stove top and looks pretty lit at night. You are so creative. Can't wait to see what else you come up with:)

    More than anything else (and there are lots of other things!!), I am amazed at your vision. How you can see things that aren't there yet, and then make them appear. Makes you a bit of a magician, doesn't it!!

    I've done the same thing. Love using the old ceiling light bulb holders as candle stands. Just recently I bought a box of parts that at one time had been a giant heavy silver Dracula candelabra. It made some gorgeous huge candle stands. I love your marriage of the clock faces with the light pieces....ingenious!! HWW

    You are so clever Rosemary!!! I know you've been doing the gesso thing for a long time and I've noticed a few bloggers who have just caught onto it and are calling it "homemade chalk paint". Have you tried that Annie Sloane's chalk paint...would you say it was the same?

    Hi Rosemary,
    I wrote to you the other night since I did not understand "Gesso." Well, I took the bottle back to Hobby Lobby and lo and behold....that batch had been recalled since it was all dried out. I bout a new bottle of Gesso.....and now all is fine!!

    Next question: What is the "silver" that you are using. Is it just silver spray paint?

    Lastly, 50/50 mix of Gesso and white paint---isd that latex paint that you mix?
