Grey Washed Stand

Here is the after of my stand.

Remember the before?

I started with a grey primer.  After that, came layers and layers of paint, white gesso, and a final wash of grey.

I embraced the imperfections, and did a little sanding in spots to reveal some of the paint layers, including a honey color.

I almost left the handles alone, but they had such great detail that were enhanced by my paint treatment.

How do you like it?

It has a companion piece.  A bench that I'll share in another post.

  44. Well, sweetie girl, this just takes my breath away. I have always been in awe of your awesome talent. Now you've made me want to paint a plain ole black hutch this beautiful gray. I am not a painter, however, and it would NEVER look like this. I wish you lived next door to me and could teach me to paint like you.

It's gorgeous and inspiring, I have 2 end tables that look just like that style that I've been storing in my basement for years, and want to redo, that paint treatment would work on them.

  53. I love this! It was pretty before, and now it's even prettier after. What color paint gray did you use? I feel like everytime I paint something grey and then do the gesso technique, my grey begins to look bluish.

  54. Love this piece...the style and the finish. Gorgeous. I have a Frenchy table and some mismatched chairs I'd like to pull together with the gray/white like you have done here. Have you put any of your techniques in a book?

  61. I am always so impressed with your furniture finishes. This is the finish I am looking to do for 2 pieces I have sitting in the garage for my bedroom. Could you share more about how you do the process? Instead of gray I want to use cream and white over a pink base. I already have my ASCP colors but can't get the nerve to begin. Thanks~ ~Ahrisha~ ~

  63. Oh my gosh, Rosemary, this is the exact look I'm wanting for the sewing cabinet I inherited from my grandmother. Can you provide more details: what color grey paint you used; how many layers are involved in "layers and layers of paint;" and the final wash of grey (is that a wash created from the initial grey paint?). Inquiring minds want to know... Thanks. I absolutely love looking at your posts. Please respond to me at dkremenliff@csuchico.edu I'm providing this because I don't understand the instructions on how to change my profile to show my email address. I feel really stupid because I don't even know where to find my Dashboard.

  64. Rosemary,
I love how you painted this table and would love to try it. Will you give more detailed instructions on how you did it? Thank You, Jeanine

  65. I just love the look of this. Did you seal it in the end or just leave it with the paint and gesso layers?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'd also love to know what grey you used as the final coat. This is SO beautiful, and I have a great vanity and dresser set that need a new look. I'm also wondering if I could use a glossy grey, or a clear gloss coat for the vanity, so that cleaning up any makeup mess is easie .

    1. Lindsey, this was over three years ago. I believe I mixed the paint, so, it's not a color I can give you a name for. I would suggest you check out your local paint store, and, pick a shade similar, or, just a color you like. You can use a gloss coat if you like. It won't look like this, but, it will give that clean up you want.

  67. Love this.. How many layers of color.and how did you use the gesso?

  68. I was wondering the same thing...I wish you would do a tutorial on how to get this technique. It is such a beautiful piece. Please show us step by step " Lovely"
