First posted August 9, 2012, here's "Shabby Magnetic Board".
I've been trying to rest up after my show this past weekend, but I had an idea for a beat up frame I've had lying around for a while.
Here is where we started.
As you can see, the frame was missing some of the trim. Last year I bought a huge bag of fabric roses for $1.00. Because, well, they were $1.00, and they were roses.
They came in handy for this little project.
I hot glued them to the area that was missing trim, and sprayed them with sealer to stiffen them. After multiple coats of white spray paint, and a couple coats of white gesso, this is what I had.
I left a bit of the pink, and I embraced the touches of fraying.
I left a bit of the pink, and I embraced the touches of fraying.
The magnetic board is a piece of tin I cut,
and sprayed black. Add a couple frenchy magnets, and I'm done.
A little shabby, a little quirky.

ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous frame, Rosemary! I love the addition of the roses. I would have thought they were part of the original frame. It makes for a pretty magnetic board; would look great in a ladies craft room or office.

ReplyDeleteWhat a WONDERFUL idea Rosemary!!! The mirror is absolutely gorgeous but of course it would be after you get your hands on it ;) Michaels has some paper roses in their wedding section that you would so LOVE...and they would be perfect for the gesso technique! I love how you use gesso, it's a wonderful thing, right?? hugs and love, Dawn

What a gorgeous transformation, Rosemary! I never would have thought to use the fabric roses. I've seen many beautiful old frames that are missing some of the trim, and never knew what I'd do with them. Now I know! Thanks for the inspiration:)
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful. I have a mirror that has tired looking fabric roses around it. I think by doing this it would give it a new life. I want to try this, but I'm not sure what you mean by a sealer. Can you tell me what that is. Thanks for all your inspirations!
ReplyDeleteThat frame is absolutely gorgeous! If this is what you do when you are resting..... I love how it turned out.

ReplyDeleteWow I can't believe the beautiful changes you made to this piece! Just an old piece that many people would throw out but I love how you recreated this into a beautiful magnetic board. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletewww.iheartpears.blogspot.com
Love how you changed this. Years ago, maybe 20 or so, my mom had a beautiful vase with flowers that were stiffened and so glossy. I loved that little arrangement, been wanting to make one for years. Might just have to put it on a frame now that I see yours~Love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm now following you!
What a great way to use those silk roses! They look like they are metal or porcelain once you attached them to the frame and painted them. Brilliant!

Hello! Rosemary, I hope you don't mind a few questions at this late date? I've 2 mirrors I want to garnish with faux maple leaves. I was wondering if you recommend gesso then plaster? Or just gesso? Did you dip them or paint them? I love the idea of sealing them. Am I on track thinking you used something like a polyurathane to stiffen them? Or starch + poly?
ReplyDeleteI am excited to fancy up these really boring mirrors. The straight, Craftsman look is no longer my love. :) I appreciate your time and advice! Sincerely, Christine
So pretty Rosemary. So great it can be used for magnets too.
ReplyDeleteKris
Very sweet, Rosemary. I will never look at a broken frame again. Blessings
