Faux Oxidation

This little vintage galvanized pail was the inspiration for my "oxidized" wine boxes.






The more I looked at it, the more it looked like my "Old World Finish", with rust peeking through.



So, that's pretty much what I did to get my faux oxidation.  Only I watered down my white paint/gesso mix, and I didn't rub it off.  I let it settle.



However, you will never get the exact same effect twice.  The end result will have a lot to do with what you are starting with, and how much you practice.  Rust, and imperfections help.  You should also clean and dry your piece first.



I watered down the paint on the first box more than the second one.  How thick the "faux" oxidation will be, just depends on how much water you add, how many layers you apply, blah, blah, blah.  So, you can take this,



to this.





Now, I do have other oxidation techniques, but I won't be sharing them.  Why? Partly because they involve chemicals, and scary stuff.  Plus, well....I can't share ALL my secrets.

I love the look of oxidized metal with flowers.

    Love this technique.I don't blame you for not sharing all of your techniques.Although you could write a book :-) .I agree it looks beautiful with those flowers too!

    You are more brave than I am--I did the acid mirror thing once...love the effect but feel lucky I didn't end up in the emergency room. Your technique shared here seems safe:)

    Rosemary I love galvanized anything :)
    I just picked up an old bucket myself sad that it had a bit of a crushed dent at the bottom, but still a beauty. So now that I have seen what you have created it gives galvanize a whole new twist.
    Those wine boxes make for great holiday gifting ...a little filler a bottle of wine some cheeses in the other side wrapped up in clear wrap and you have a gift a winery would be proud to sell.

    This is an inspiring piece. You may find me inspired enough to try one of my own.
