Once again, I was almost done, before I thought to take a pic.
The inserts were already there. I decoupaged the french book page on one, poked holes, and attached the fleur-de-lis with wire.
After putting everything together, I antiqued the entire piece, and did a gesso wash over it. I distressed the frame.

Rosemary, since following your blog I've been experimenting with Gesso and I love the stuff. I will be sharing a make over soon. Its a kist with enormous metal handles and front clasp. I used your method of grey underneath and gesso over the top and I love the look!
